Founded in faith in 1869

St. Joseph’s Church was officially founded in 1869 to serve the growing Catholic community of Fort Edward and the surrounding region. Before our parish was established, local Catholics had to travel by foot, horse, or carriage to neighboring Glens Falls and Hudson Falls just to attend Sunday Mass. Guided by a shared vision, approximately 300 Catholic families united with determination and devotion to establish a permanent spiritual home of their own.

The Parish Begins
About 300 Catholic families come together to establish St. Joseph’s Church and create a Catholic community in Fort Edward.

1869–1917

Our First Home
The parish purchases and renovates a former Methodist church on East Street, creating its first home for worship.

1917

A New Church
As the parish grows, a new church is built on Broadway. The first Mass is celebrated in the new church in 1917.

Today

A Continuing Legacy
St. Joseph’s continues to welcome generations of families through worship, fellowship, service, and a shared Catholic faith.
